TIRE TIP:  TREADWEAR

Many ask:  How long will my new tires last?  Unfortunately, there isn't a simple answer we can give because there are just too many variables that affect tire wear.

Your tires tread longevity depends on the wear resistance of the rubber compound, the design of the tread and the stiffness of the belts.  A good indication of your tires longevity would be found on the sidewall of your tires where there is a UTQG treadwear index number.  The higher the UTQG treadwear index number the longer the theoretical tread life.

Treadwear also depends on tire balance, maintenance, wheel alignment, road conditions and driving style.  Proper maintenance includes rotating your tires every 6,000 miles or so, tire/wheel balancing and proper inflation pressure to name a few.

No tire is going to maximize its full mileage potential if it is out of balance, never rotated from one wheel position to another, is chronically underinflated or overinflated or is out of alignment.

When driving, look at the kind of roads your tires are driving on.  Everyday road hazards can shorten the life of your tires.  An aggressive driving style; constantly spinning your tires, hard cornering, braking and accelerating can too shorten the life of your tires.

It's a good idea to routinely inspect your tires of damage.  You should look for any cuts, bulges, ripples, bruises, scrapes, missing chunks of tread, separations, cracks, etc..

There may be a time when no visible damage is evident.  If you feel a pull or vibration when driving, have your tires professionally inspected.  There maybe internal damage or defects.  A professional tire technician will demount your tire from its wheel and inspect the tire for broken belts or cords.

PLEASE NOTE:  A DAMAGED TIRE IS UNSAFE AND MUST BE REPLACED.
